May 23, 2000 — A Year in the Woods/Prologue

This will be my last entry for a while. After finals on June 2nd I am off for a whirlwind ride, first to Boston to see my sister graduate, then home for a few days, and finally to Wisconsin. For three months I’ll be volunteering at Teaching Drum Outdoor School, braving the mosquitoes and living in a primitive shelter and hopefully learning a lot and having a good time. This is part of the path I’ve been increasingly serious about exploring since learning about the W.O.L.F. Tracks program in December and realizing that I could actually make this a big part of my existence. Needless to say, the transformation from a stay-indoors couch potato to a person comfortable in and aware of nature won’t be easy, but we’ll find out if I have what it takes.

May 9, 2000 — News & Updates

So, an update on my life.

I’m frustrated with arrowheads. I can’t figure out how to thin an obsidian biface well enough to make into a nice acceptable arrowhead. I’m also a little frustrated on making a bow drill fire too, but I’ll get over it.

School holds no substantial challenges for me. I am coasting. I refuse to read for my two easy classes until a week before finals. (Which may not be that long; finals are in three weeks.)
