This will be my last entry for a while. After finals on June 2nd I am off for a whirlwind ride, first to Boston to see my sister graduate, then home for a few days, and finally to Wisconsin. For three months I’ll be volunteering at Teaching Drum Outdoor School, braving the mosquitoes and living in a primitive shelter and hopefully learning a lot and having a good time. This is part of the path I’ve been increasingly serious about exploring since learning about the W.O.L.F. Tracks program in December and realizing that I could actually make this a big part of my existence. Needless to say, the transformation from a stay-indoors couch potato to a person comfortable in and aware of nature won’t be easy, but we’ll find out if I have what it takes.
Teaching Drum is both a community and a school. They have an 80-acre place in the Northwoods of Wisconsin called Nishnajida, and it’s there that I’ll be living and working and doing whatever they tell me. Maybe along with that they will let me make some clothes and trap and forage and other good things. If nothing else, I’ll get to see how I can handle a lifestyle where nothing is taken for granted and the essentials are valued.
There is so much out there to learn. Even though I’m exploring this avenue of my life right now, and potentially as a lifestyle and career for the future, I’m still interested in a host of other things: Lucid dreams, psychology, fiction writing, acupuncture, cooking, politics (to some extent), lockpicking, etc. But all I can do is follow the path that feels right to me.
If you want, you can still sign my guestbook or write me an e-mail and I’ll reply when I get back. In the meantime: Godspeed, and see you in September.
