March 19, 2001 — A Year in the Woods/Prologue

I’ve been so focused on my attachment to a good lifestyle and friends in the college bubble, and on my fears of going to live in the wilderness, that I’d forgotten what drew me there in the first place.

Fortunately, today I received a reminder. Tamarack Song, my teacher, sent me a rough draft of his upcoming book on tracking. Tracking is the language of the forest, the art that many equate with true awareness in the wilderness.

I’ve been at Stanford for three and a half years, trudging through the mire of the academic mainstream, where spirituality is so secularized that it has no place in a “real” intellectual discussion. Before that, I spent twelve years as a product of our blindly dysfunctional public education system. So all in all, I’m glad to be leaving.

March 15, 2001 — A Year in the Woods/Prologue

Note: Prior to this post I had never had a formal “blog,” which is why I make a big deal about it. I have since added some of my previous occasional writings to the blog archives, though, which is why the archives go back farther than this date.

I can’t believe I have a blog now. It’s always seemed to be the domain of bored teenaged girls. But, I figure that a lot of people have expressed at least cursory interest (politely, with eyes beginning to glaze over) in what I’m doing, so maybe this will be a service. It’s primarily for me, though; I like to feel connected to the world, one way or another.

For those of you who don’t know … Starting in mid-April, I’ll be taking the Wilderness Guide Program at Teaching Drum Outdoor School, in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.
