May 13, 2001 — A Year in the Woods/The Year

I’ve had a very active week. Yesterday we biked several miles to gather leeks. We ate as we gathered, and also collected fiddleheads, spring beauties, and clintonias. I still don’t know much about edible plants, but if there’s a good way to remember them, it’s walking around eating them. Leeks are very onion-y (though we gathered the leaf, not the root). We’ll be feasted on these gathered edibles for a while — we’re almost forced to, as Tamarack has reduced our supermarket-supplied greens with that very end in mind.

May 7, 2001 — A Year in the Woods/The Year

I’ve hit a threshold, and kind of having a hard time with it. I think I’m bored. I can’t help it; I was raised in a society addicted to certain types of overstimulation, like foods and the Internet, and without certain other kinds, like living with the weather and wet clothes and animals and birds all around. So it stands to reason that I get bored and begin to crave stimulation of the former sort and respite from the latter. Although, I don’t know how healthy relief would be, actually. On day 12 I went back in to the house and visited town, and I got myself sick on sweets. Now I just crave them all the more, and there’s nothing I can do about it.
