I can’t believe only a week has passed since I’ve last come in to town. It feels like two or three weeks. Time is so expanded at Nishnajida.
The weather held out long enough for us to do finish the major work on the earth lodge, the final building project of the year. It took a few days of powering up to get the retaining wall together, and get the birch bark and peat on, but now it looks like a castle.

Been debating a lot lately. There are aspects of me at odds with other aspects. Many of my fellows have argued that civilization has few truly redeeming qualities, and that those redeeming qualities that it has are mainly in response to problems that civilization has created in the first place.
I can’t find any really good responses to this, but I’ve been struggling to find a way around it. I don’t want to believe that it’s all shit. And, I don’t think the answer is to return to being hunter-gatherer — which may after all be moot, because it’s not possible to return fully to the Old Way, in terms of a fully sustainable, mobile community.
