The aim of the Game is to win by rising above the other players; and to win, one must either succeed beyond the achievements of the other players, or bring better players down. And above all, the status quo must be maintained; only then is one’s place assured.

The Game has many different possible arenas. Politics exists everywhere. Institutions of science, the media, religion, and certainly government and business all play the Game in one form or another. Students play the Game in the form of popularity; politicians seek political offices as prizes; scientists aim for publication in major journals.

October 9, 2003 — Magic & Spirituality

Three months ago I began practicing a Western esoteric tradition. It includes intense self-examination and transformation as well as exercises to hone the mind and body. I find it very practical and helpful in focusing my life and spiritual growth. I enjoy, too, that Toltec practices provides a solid foundation and complementary techniques. I’m pleased that I have systems of growth into which I can channel my energies.

Maybe I feel compelled to state my “party affiliation” when it comes to spirituality because of my recent experience with my landlord. Bill, a very friendly man and a good landlord, came up to replace some ceiling tiles that had been damaged by a leak in the roof. We talked as he worked, and since he is Christian some of his phrases are colored with the language.
